The manufacturer had robust connectivity, the latest operational technology (OT) and the manpower to create solutions. The team just needed guidance on how to tie all those capabilities together to create a seamless, information generating solution—one that lays the foundation for long-term growth.Â
The Challenge: Outgrowing Point-to-Point ConnectionsÂ
Before Flexware got involved, this manufacturer’s environment looked like a lot of plants. Every machine, line and building was generating valuable data. However, gaining holistic access to that data required integrating each system with the broader ecosystem using point-to-point connections.Â
That approach is sufficient with a small number of connections. But as the number of systems that need to communicate grows, so does the time and effort required to connect them. Â
As a result, the team was spending most of their time creating new connections and supporting existing connections rather than actually using the data to drive insights. Furthermore, since the manufacturer was operating an enterprise, each site had its own connections and its own non-comparable KPIs, making it difficult to benchmark performance. Â
The technical debt and time spent converting data to information was accelerating faster than the benefits being received by the organization. Not only did the bleeding need to stop, but they also needed to position their data infrastructure for long-term growth.Â
The Solution: Connecting the Enterprise with a Centralized Data Hub Â
Flexware recommended adopting a Unified Namespace (UNS) architecture. Instead of building a separate connection between every system, the UNS architecture allows systems to be connected once to a central spot that’s organized and real-time. If a system needs information, it pulls it from the central hub. If a system has information, it just drops it off there. This ensures all systems are working off the same data. Â
The central hub is primarily supported by a software communication component called an MQTT broker. Think of it like a central switchboard. It’s simple, dependable and built to move data in real time. Â
Now, instead of a rat’s nest of direct connections, the manufacturer has one clean central data router that can scale alongside the business. Â
We also implemented a UNS Manager app, which delivers much of the architecture’s ongoing value. It functions as a governance layer for data movement across the enterprise. Each site has its own local hub, and the UNS Manager controls how that site’s data flows up to the main enterprise hub. It decides what gets shared, ensures it conforms to the approved data standard and directs it to its intended destination. Â
The Result: Full VisibilityÂ
The impact of this new architecture was immediate. What once required a dedicated integration project now takes a single connection to the UNS, reducing implementation time and freeing the team for higher-value work. Additionally, the team now has full visibility across every site. Both people and systems can see what’s happening in real time, so insights are generated quickly and decisions are made faster. Furthermore, because the setup is built to grow, getting bigger doesn’t mean getting more complicated. The manufacturer can add sites, systems, lines and new solutions without starting from scratch every time.Â
Perhaps most significantly, the team has reclaimed their time. Instead of maintaining a fragile web of connections, they can focus on work that drives the business forward.Â

Structuring data in this way doesn’t just solve today’s integration challenges. It creates the connected data foundation that will be critical for the future.Â
