Armed with tools and helpful hearts, some of our team, family, and friends traveled last weekend to Mexico to help build homes for two needy families. Partnering with Homes of Hope, we were able to build two houses in just two days! It was a touching experience for everyone involved!
FlexDog Jon Dosmann shares his experience:
The Homes of Hope trip was a wonderful experience. We built all day on Friday and for half a day on Saturday. On the first day (Friday), we split into three teams:
- the wall builders,
- the ceiling joist builders,
- and the painters.
I helped build the walls. By lunch time on Friday, we managed to have 4 walls of our home up, with a wall separating them running down the middle. By the end of day one, we had the roof decking on, all the dry wall up, and most of the painting finished. The family themselves working side-by-side with us, regardless of the language barrier, was very fun! It’s amazing what you can get done with non-verbal communication.
On day two, we sent the family off on a surprise Wal-Mart trip, as we put the final details on the house. When everyone got back, we made a circle around the front door of the new home to present the keys, a plaque, and a bible to the new homeowners. Each person from our team was able to say a few words about how much the trip meant to them, while the translator translated the words to Spanish for the family. It was a very moving experience for everyone. The family thanked us with a heartfelt speech filled with smiles and tears. Saying our goodbyes, there were lots of hugs, high fives, and prayers. At the end of the trip, I could tell everyone was truly impacted by the trip.
